Gauge: 22 stitches per 4 inches (10cm), 24 rows per 4 inches (10cm)
Cast on: 80 [100] stitches with MC, join in the round being careful not to twist and place marker; knit 10 rows 2x2 ribbing with MC
Begin pattern:Rows 1 & 2: knit with CC
Row 3: knit with CC and sock yarn as follows: knit 1 stitch in CC, knit 1 stitch in sock yarn, carrying alternate yarns loosely across wrong side of row, repeat around
Rows 4 & 5: knit with CC
Rows 6 & 7: knit with sock yarn, carrying sock yarn up from Row 3, making sure to carry it loosely so that the hat doesn't pucker along the side
Rows 8 & 9: knit with MC, carrying MC strand up from ribbing, again making sure to carry it loosely
Row 11: knit with MC and sock yarn as follows: knit 1 stitch in MC, knit 1 stitch in sock yarn, carrying alternate yarns loosely across wrong side of row, repeat around
Rows 12 & 13: knit with MC
Rows 14 & 15: knit with sock yarn
Repeat pattern, then repeat Rows 1-7—for a total of four CC stripes, three MC stripes (not including ribbing), and seven sock yarn stripes. Slip the first stitch at the beginning of rows 5 and 13. This helps make the jog between rows less visible. Carry CC loosely up from below when repeating Row 1.
Crown: knit in MC
Rows 1,3,5,7: knit
Row 2: k2, k2tog; repeat around
Row 4: k1, k2tog; repeat around
Row 6: k2tog; repeat around
Cut yarn and thread through remaining stitches, pull tight and weave in ends; add tassel or pom pom to top if desired
